The HI virus<\/h2>\n

The HI virus belongs to the retrovirus family and, if left untreated, can damage certain cells of the immune system, in particular the T helper cells, which leads to a weakening of the body's own defences - hence the name \u201ehuman immunodeficiency virus\u201c. The main route of transmission is through unprotected sexual intercourse (anal or vaginal) and the exchange of syringes. An infected mother can also transmit the virus to her unborn child. In everyday life, however, transmission is very unlikely.<\/span><\/p>\n

The classic symptoms of an acute HIV infection include flu-like symptoms, fatigue, fever, diarrhoea and skin rashes.<\/span><\/p>\n

HI-Virus medication<\/h2>\n

HIV infection is treated by regularly taking antiretroviral medication. These drugs ensure that the viral load in the body is reduced to such an extent that the HI virus falls below the detection limit. This prevents the virus from multiplying and helps to keep the immune system stable. Consistent medication thus protects the body's own defences and enables those affected to lead a largely normal life.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although there is currently no cure for HIV infection, antiretroviral therapy can effectively control the virus. To ensure long-term control and stabilise health, it is necessary to take the medication for the rest of your life. HIV tests<\/h2>\n

Sexually active people are recommended to have an HIV antibody test carried out regularly in order to recognise a possible infection at an early stage. Timely diagnosis is crucial in order to take appropriate measures and protect your health.<\/span><\/p>\n

With the HIV antibody test, it should be noted that there is a diagnostic window of around 6 weeks during which the virus may not yet be detectable.
