Dry eyes caused by air conditioning<\/h1>\n

What's actually happening?<\/h2>\n

Air conditioners provide pleasant temperatures on hot days, but simultaneously remove moisture from the indoor air. This is exactly what can cause problems for our eyes. The dry air accelerates the evaporation of the protective tear film, meaning the sensitive surface of the eye is no longer sufficiently moisturised. This is particularly noticeable in offices, cars, or aeroplanes. Those who also spend many hours working at a computer often unconsciously intensify this effect: when concentrating on the screen, we blink significantly less frequently, which prevents the tear film from distributing evenly over the eye. The result is dry, irritated, or burning eyes, which often become noticeable towards the end of the working day.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

The tear film is a sophisticated protective system<\/h2>\n

Contrary to popular belief, tears are not just made of water. The tear film is a complex protective system made up of three functional layers. The outermost layer contains fats (lipids), which are produced by the meibomian glands on the edge of the eyelid and prevent the tear fluid from evaporating too quickly. Beneath this is the aqueous layer, which makes up the largest part of the tear film. It supplies the cornea with oxygen and nutrients, keeps the eye surface moist, and also contains substances that ward off pathogens. The innermost mucin layer finally ensures that the tears are evenly distributed over the eye surface and can adhere well. If one of these layers is disrupted or the tear fluid evaporates too quickly, the eye surface becomes more susceptible to irritation and inflammation.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

These symptoms suggest dry eyes.<\/h2>\n

The symptoms often develop gradually. Many sufferers initially report a burning or stinging sensation in their eyes, which is later often accompanied by a feeling of a foreign body or grit. The eyes may become red, tire more quickly, or experience temporary blurred vision, although sight usually improves again after a few blinks. One phenomenon often causes confusion: dry eyes can paradoxically result in increased tearing. The irritated eye surface triggers a reflex tearing, but these tears do not have the right composition to permanently replace the unstable tear film.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Which eye drops really help?<\/h2>\n

Not every dry eye has the same cause. Therefore, the available artificial tears also differ. Preparations containing hyaluronic acid are among the most commonly used products, as they bind large amounts of water and adhere to the eye surface for a long time. This makes them particularly suitable for mild to moderate symptoms. Other active ingredients such as carboxymethylcellulose or hypromellose increase the viscosity of the tear fluid and also ensure longer-lasting lubrication. In cases of irritated mucous membranes, combinations with dexpanthenol can support regeneration. If the cause is primarily impaired lipid layer, such as with Meibomian gland dysfunction, lipid-containing eye drops or sprays are often more suitable, as they reduce tear evaporation. For severe symptoms or for use at night, eye gels or eye ointments may be an option, as they remain on the eye for longer, although they can temporarily cause slight blurring of vision. Those who regularly need eye drops should choose preservative-free preparations if possible, as these irritate the eye surface less in the long term.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Small tips with a big impact<\/h2>\n

The correct application also determines how effectively eye drops work. Hands should be washed thoroughly before applying them. It is also important that the dropper tip does not touch the eye or eyelashes to prevent contamination. A single drop is perfectly sufficient \u2013 the eye cannot absorb any more anyway. After applying the drops, it is advisable to gently close the eye and press lightly on the inner corner of the eye for about a minute. This allows the active ingredient to remain on the surface of the eye for longer and less will drain away through the tear duct. If multiple eye drops are being used, there should be a five to ten-minute interval between each preparation. Eye ointments should always be applied last.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

This can be done preventatively<\/h2>\n

Even small changes in everyday life can help prevent dry eyes. Ventilation nozzles on air conditioning units should ideally not be directed straight at the face, as the airflow can further dry out the tear film. It is also worthwhile, especially during prolonged screen work, to consciously blink fully and regularly and to let your gaze wander into the distance. The so-called 20-20-20 rule can help: Every 20 minutes, look at a point about six metres away for approximately 20 seconds. Drinking enough, maintaining a pleasant humidity level indoors, and taking a break from contact lenses if necessary can further alleviate the symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

When medical help is needed<\/h2>\n

While dry eyes are usually harmless, there are situations where an ophthalmologist consultation is important. If severe pain, sudden vision deterioration, marked light sensitivity, or purulent discharge occur, medical advice should be sought promptly. The same applies if only one eye is affected, complaints arise after an injury, or symptoms persist for a longer period despite appropriate treatment. In the pharmacy, it is often possible to assess which artificial tear substitute is best suited and whether self-treatment is sufficient or an ophthalmological examination should be recommended.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Contact lenses and dry eyes<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dry eyes can make wearing contact lenses significantly more uncomfortable. Not all eye drops are suitable for contact lenses. Look for relevant instructions or use preservative-free preparations. In cases of severe discomfort, it may be advisable to switch to wearing glasses temporarily.<\/p>\n
