Before visiting bee colonies, several important measures must be taken to ensure the safety of both visitors and bees:
- Wear protective clothingBeekeeper's suit or at least a beekeeper's jacket, gloves and a veil protect against bee stings.
- Prepare smokerA bee smoker helps to calm the bees and mask their alarm odour.
- Calm behaviourSlow, calm movements are important so as not to frighten or irritate the bees.
- Health checkPeople with bee sting allergies should have their medication ready and carry an EpiPen if necessary.
- Note the weatherVisits should take place in dry, calm weather, ideally in the early afternoon when most of the bees are foraging.
- Respect for the beesBees are important for the environment. Respect their habitats and work gently with the hives to minimise disturbance.
