What is CBD and how does it work?

CBD (cannabidiol) is a natural active ingredient from the hemp plant. Unlike THC, it does not have an intoxicating effect. CBD is extracted from industrial hemp, which is legally cultivated in Austria as long as the THC content is very low. Like humans, dogs have their own endocannabinoid system. Safety and legal situation of CBD in animals in Austria

• Well tolerated: CBD does not produce intoxication or addiction. With the correct dosage, side effects are rare. Veterinary studies have only occasionally reported mild sedation or digestive problems.
• Note THC content: Products for dogs should contain practically no THC, as THC can have a toxic effect on dogs. In Austria, the permitted THC limit for authorised hemp products is < 0.3 %.
• Not an official animal medicine: CBD preparations are not authorised as medicines for pets in Austria. They are usually sold as feed supplements or care products and are not permitted to make any healing claims. Vets may only prescribe CBD as a prescription medicine in individual cases.
