Echinacea (Echinacea)

Focus on medicinal herbs: coneflower (Echinacea)

The coneflower, botanically known as Echinacea, has been an integral part of traditional herbal medicine for centuries. Originally from North America, it was already valued by indigenous peoples to support the body's defences. Today, it is one of the best-known medicinal plants when it comes to strengthening the immune system. Especially during the cold season, many people turn to preparations containing echinacea to support their natural defences and prevent infections.

Echinacea - a traditional medicinal herb

The bright purple flowers not only make it an eye-catcher in the garden, but also a proven medicinal plant. Its full flowering splendour unfolds from June to September. The leaves and flowers are harvested during this time, while the roots are traditionally collected in autumn, when they contain the most valuable ingredients.

Effect and use of echinacea

This medicinal plant is said to have an immunostimulating effect due to various ingredients such as alkylamides, polysaccharides and flavonoids. These support the activation of certain defence cells and can thus strengthen the body's own defences at the first signs of a cold. Studies indicate that coneflower preparations can be used both preventively and as an adjunct to shorten the duration of colds.

There are many different ways to use it. Echinacea is available as a tea, tincture, juice, tablets or in capsule form. It is important to ensure high-quality processing and a standardised dosage. Short-term use can be useful for acute complaints, while a longer, preventative course is recommended, especially during the cold season. The medicinal plant is also used externally - for example in ointments that can support skin regeneration.

However, it should be noted that echinacea is not suitable for everyone. People with autoimmune diseases or certain allergies should seek medical advice before taking it. The following also applies to children and pregnant women: use should always be agreed with a doctor or pharmacist.
