Cystitis

Causes, symptoms and treatment of cystitis

Cystitis is usually caused by bacteria, often Escherichia coli, entering the urethra and further into the bladder. These bacteria multiply and cause inflammation of the bladder mucosa. Risk factors include insufficient fluid intake, incomplete emptying of the bladder, sexual intercourse and a weakened immune system. Hormonal changes, such as during the menopause, can also make the mucous membranes more susceptible. A weakened immune defence and certain anatomical features also increase the risk. Women are affected more frequently than men due to their shorter urethra.

Symptoms and complaints of cystitis

Cystitis manifests itself through a variety of unpleasant symptoms. Frequent and heavy urination, accompanied by a burning or painful sensation, is typical. Those affected often feel a constant urge to urinate, even though the bladder is not full. The urine can be cloudy and have an unpleasant odour, sometimes even containing blood. Pain or pressure in the lower abdomen is also common. In severe cases, fever and general malaise may occur, indicating a more extensive infection. It is important to act quickly at the first sign of cystitis to avoid complications and to relieve the symptoms quickly.

Effective treatment options for cystitis

Cystitis is usually treated with antibiotics to combat the bacterial pathogens. It is important to complete all the medication prescribed by the doctor. Painkillers can also be used to alleviate the symptoms. Drinking plenty of fluids, especially water, helps to flush out the bacteria. Home remedies such as cranberry juice and warm sitz baths can also have a supportive effect. Further medical examinations should be carried out in the case of recurring or chronic infections. In severe cases or in the event of complications, medical treatment is essential.

Prevent bladder inflammation

To prevent bladder infections, good hygiene is important, such as washing your hands regularly and thoroughly and avoiding sitting for too long. Drink enough water to flush the bladder regularly. Urinate immediately after sexual intercourse to flush out bacteria. Avoid tight clothing and make sure your abdomen is warm enough. A healthy diet and regular exercise strengthen the immune system and can help prevent infections.
